Here's Your First Look at Terrence Malick's Film About the Austin Music Scene

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jan 3, 2017

Way back in 2011, Ryan Gosling was spotted at a bunch of hip music festivals in Austin. The legendary appearances resulted in a hyper-specific Tumblr and a rumour that he even completed a stage dive during a set by hardcore luminaries American Nightmare.

Of course, the appearances were not just for fun. Gosling was attending the festivals to complete research and shoot footage for a longstanding film about the Austin music scene from director Terrence Malick.

The project was long referred to as Weightless, but it's since been given a new title, an official synopsis and its first official screenshot (available above courtesy of Indiewire).

The film is now called Song to Song, and in addition to the Gos it features appearances from Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch and Holly Hunter.

As if that weren't enough, the film has been given an official synopsis:

In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock 'n' roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

Song to Song will receive a limited release on March 17. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
