Sure, you all say that you can't wait to get outside and enjoy the sunshine when spring finally hits, but do you really mean it? Wouldn't you rather gorge yourself on buttery popcorn and bask in the artificial comfort of air-conditioning at your local movie theatre?

Since we all know the answer is yes, we've compiled a list of movies hitting Canadian theatres this May. They span from heart-aching dramas and thought-provoking documentaries to big, brain-blasting blockbusters. Though you should certainly consult your local source for regional release dates, you can dig into our guide to May at the movies below.

May 4

Overboard
Directed by Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg
Starring Anna Faris, Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria

A cleaner gets frustrated by an obnoxious billionaire; when he hits his head falling off his yacht and gets amnesia, she convinces him they're a happily married poor couple. Do they invariably fall in love? Will he learn lessons only wise poors can teach? (MGM)

May 11

Breaking In
Directed by James McTeigue
Starring Gabrielle Union, Billy Burke, Richard Cabral, Ajiona Alexus

A return to a specific staple — woman in distress gets unexpected revenge (see: Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy, J-Lo in Enough) Gabrielle Union gets all badass on some dudes when a home invasion threatens her family. May 11 (Universal)

Revenge
Directed by Coralie Fargeat
Starring Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Kevin Janssens, Vincent Colombe

For a more gruesome take on similar themes, Coralie Fargeat has unleashed a visual feast of desert-set seduction and mayhem in her violent thriller Revenge. When Jen (Matilda Lutz) is assaulted by her lover's hunting buddies, she takes matters into her own hands. It's all right there in the title.
(Mongrel)

The Seagull
Directed by Michael Mayer
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss, Annette Bening, Corey Stoll

A trio of terrific women are feature attraction of this Chekhov adaptation concerning an aging actress taking her annual visit to a country estate and the young love that blossoms. Sure to be a salve to those seeking shelter from louder fare. (Mongrel)

May 18

Deadpool 2
Directed by David Leitch
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Josh Brolin

Two years out from its ridiculously successful debut, Ryan Reynolds is back for another turn as the wise-cracking superhero Deadpool. In his sophomore outing, the foul-mouthed hero must face down Cable (Josh Brolin). Of course, we can expect a near-equal ratio of jokes and explosions when Deadpool 2 hits theatres.
(Marvel)

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Directed by Ron Howard
Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrellson, Paul Bettany

Alden Ehrenreich takes on the role of the scruffy-looking nerf herder in this prequel designed to unlock dozens more SWU films. Ehrenreich looks like a bit of a charisma vacuum; more encouraging are the presence of Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newton, although Donald Glover is clearly gonna own the whole movie as the young Lando Calrissian. (Lucasfilm)

Disobedience
Directed by Sebastián Lelio
Starring Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, Alessandro Nivola

Following his Oscar-winning film A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio returns with, well, more fantastic women in the form of two Rachels. Weisz and McAdams star as a pair of secret lovers who attempt to hide their affair from the Orthodox Jewish community in which they live. (Mongrel)

RBG
Directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West

How unlikely is the rise to pop culture ubiquity of an octogenarian U.S. Supreme Court Justice? Even Gloria Steinem describes her as "The closest thing to a superhero I know." In chronicling the rise of third-wave feminism that she parallels, this documentary examines the activist life of the notorious R.B.G. (Mongrel)

On Chesil Beach
Directed by Dominic Cooke
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Emily Watson, Billy Howle

Based on Ian McEwan's 2007 Booker Prize shortlisted novel, On Chesil Beach explores the relationship between a young newlywed couple whose views collide in conservative '60s England. (BBC Films)
