Last night's Golden Globes were, by all accounts, an uncomfortable near-disaster due to host Jo Koy's dead-in-the-water monologue and a series of weird technical decisions — well wishes to those who actually watched.
But, flop-sweat ceremony aside, some deserving people took home some awards! While some winners were to be expected — Billie Eilish and her brother seem contractually obligated to take home at least one award at every ceremony they attend, and some of the big category winners felt like obvious shoe-ins — there were some pleasant surprises.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph took home the Best Supporting Actress statue for her work in The Holdovers, while her co-star Paul Giamatti also nabbed a win for his work.
Emma Stone was Giamatti's winning counterpart in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category for Poor Things, while Cillian Murphy unsurprisingly won the gold for his performance in Oppenheimer.
The most inspiring win of the night came when Lily Gladstone took home the prize for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for her stirring performance as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Gladstone became the first Indigenous person in history to win the award, and she spoke some of her Blackfeet language in her acceptance speech.
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari took home the award for best screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, which also won Best Motion Picture, Non-English Language.
In TV world, The Bear, Beef and Succession racked up a handful of wins each, with Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White, Sarah Snook, Matthew Mcfadyen, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun all walking away with statues.
