'Get Out' Star Daniel Kaluuya Is Making a 'Barney' Movie That Will "Subvert Expectations"

If you're of a certain age, you may remember a time where the most offensive possible thing on TV was a purple dinosaur who loved to clean. Barney fever has since slowed down drastically, but the reptile's reign will soon reemerge with the dawn of a new movie. And it's coming from an unexpected source.

As Variety reports, Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya will produce a new, live-action Barney movie through his 59% company alongside Valparaiso Pictures and Mattel Films. And this ain't your daddy's (or, more likely, little sibling's) Barney.

"Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations," Mattel Films' Robbie Brenner said in a statement.

Before you get too excited about the prospect of Barney as a psychological thriller, however, it's worth noting that Brenner probably just means it'll be a self-aware reboot.

"The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today's kids," he added.

Kaluuya said, "Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We're excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of 'I love you, you love me' can stand the test of time."

So far, no release date has been set for the film, but stay tuned.
