Despite Guillermo del Toro recently confirming that Hellboy 3 is 100% not happening, there's sudden new hope for the franchise, as celebrated UK director Neil Marshall has signed on for a reboot. However, it will no longer involve del Toro or original Hellboy Ron Perlman.

Marshall — best known for helming some of Game of Thrones' most epic battle-sequence episodes, as well as cult horror classic The Descent, fantasy Centurion and, hell, even an episode of Westworld — has been tapped to direct the new Hellboy film, which has the working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. Though it sounds a bit unconfirmed at this point, Stranger Things star David Harbour will also apparently be taking Perlman's role as the red-skinned titular character.

According to Variety, Millennium Films is in negations to oversee the project. The film is also right now being scripted by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, with the end result aiming to have an R rating.

Speaking to Silver Screen Beat [via Bloody Disgusting], Crosby said we can expect a much more adult Hellboy with the reboot.

"[This] is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy," he said. "Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor's edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that's what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics. "The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be."

At this point, there's no word on when Marshall's new Hellboy will arrive.
