While Witcher may have satisfied some desire for more Game of Thrones, there's obviously still a major want for the real deal. By the sounds of things, that will be coming in 2022 — the year HBO is eyeing to unleash GoT prequel series House of the Dragon.
While HBO confirmed last year it was ordering up House of the Dragon, details about the anticipated spinoff have been vague, at best. Now HBO programming head Casey Bloys has indicated we can expect the series to arrive in 2022, despite the show not yet laying out its production dates.
Speaking to Variety, Bloys said his "best guess" for the premiere date of House of the Dragon was 2022, explaining, "They are in the room breaking story right now. My guess is we'll see it on the air in '22."
As previously reported, the series is being based on George R.R. Martin's 2018 prequel book Fire and Blood, a companion piece to his beloved A Song of Ice and Fire series. The story takes place 300 years before the main GoT storyline, and the resulting TV series will be made up of 10 episodes.
In the Variety interview, Bloys also shed some light on the now abandoned Game of Thrones prequel series, which was to star Naomi Watts and helmed by Jane Goldman.
"Pilots – sometimes they come together, sometimes they don't," said Bloys. "And I would say that was very much the case here. There's nothing I would point to and say 'Oh, this was the problem.'"
Comparing the greenlit House of the Dragon and Goldman's project, he added, "That [prequel] was 8,000 years before the current show, so it required a lot more invention. One of the benefits of House of the Dragon is there was a text from George and there was a little bit more of a roadmap. [Goldman's prequel] did have more challenges in terms of establishing a world, but I think she handled that beautifully… there wasn't one glaring thing."
