Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn was recently fired from the upcoming third movie in the series after conservative enemies dug up some years-old pedophilia jokes from his Twitter page. Now, fans are petitioning to have Gunn reinstated by Disney and Marvel, and the campaign is gaining steam.

The petition on Change.org has garnered significant support, with almost 83,000 signatures as of press time. In a write-up accompanying the campaign, the folks behind the petition acknowledge that the jokes were "shitty and un-funny." They also argue that Gunn wasn't yet working with Disney at the made the jokes and, "I doubt there's one human on this planet who hasn't made a shitty joke once or twice in there [sic] life."

After the old jokes were discovered, Gunn apologized and issued a statement saying, "I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over."
