Emo 'Star Wars' Actor Adam Driver Doesn't Know What Emo Is

Back in 2015 when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theatres, the internet was a different place. Twitter, for example, was less a haven for Nazi sympathizers and more of a place where people had fun with fictional pop culture accounts. It was there that Emo Kylo Ren was born.

The wildly popular Twitter account took Adam Driver's moody character and detailed exactly how emo he was being in his Star Wars movie. Now, however, ahead of its sequel, Driver has revealed that he doesn't even know what emo is.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Driver was straight-up asked for his thoughts on the Emo Kylo Ren meme and his response was rather shocking. "What is emo?" he asked.

Most of us would've spent the next hour schooling Driver on the post-hardcore subgenre, from its beginning in Washington, DC's Revolution Summer through its underground '90s iteration, screamo offshoot, mainstream acceptance and current cultural status as both a resurrected artform and fodder for ironic DJ nights. Instead, the Rolling Stone interviewer let Driver keep talking.

"You have someone who's being told that he's special his whole life," Driver said of Kylo Ren, "and he can feel it. And he feels everything probably more intensely than the people around him, you know?"

Yeah bud, you're describing emo. You've just answered your own question.

Emo Kylo Ren will return in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens on December 15.
