Emma Thompson: "Harvey Weinstein Is a Predator"

The actress delivered a scathing takedown of the Hollywood film producer and the "conspiracy of silence" on UK television

Emma Thompson is the latest high-profile actress to publicly denounce disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in the wake of the sexual harassment and assault allegations brought against him.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight yesterday evening (October 12), Thompson talked about the toxic masculinity and "conspiracy of silence" that he's come to represent in the film industry.

She concedes that her primary interactions with the producer involved her "shouting at him down the phone that I never wanted to work with him ever ever ever."

She goes on to explain the terrifying power structures in place in the film industry, suggesting that there are "many" other men in similar positions to Weinstein who demonstrate the same behaviour — arguing that it shouldn't take allegations as serious and numerous as those against Weinstein for it "to count."

Thompson also acknowledges her privilege as an educated white woman with the luxury of choosing what projects she's worked on throughout her career, but maintains that every woman everywhere has a story about being sexually harassed.
