Emma Stone Says Male Co-Stars Have Taken Salary Cuts to Ensure Equal Pay

After taking home her La La Land Oscar, actress Emma Stone is set to square off against Steve Carell in Battle of the Sexes. While the film's title references a specific tennis match in the '70s, it still rings true today as Stone recently opened up about Hollywood's gendered pay inequality.

Speaking to Out Magazine, Stone said that multiple male co-stars have taken pay cuts in order to ensure equality:

And that's something they do for me because they feel it's what's right and fair. That's something that's also not discussed, necessarily — that our getting equal pay is going to require people to selflessly say, "That's what's fair." If my male co-star, who has a higher quote than me but believes we are equal, takes a pay cut so that I can match him, that changes my quote in the future and changes my life.

While that's certainly an admirable move by her male counterparts, it's ridiculous that it requires such a move for Stone and other female actors to get paid what they deserve. Here's hoping if people keep speaking out, that will change.

Battle of the Sexes arrives in September. Watch the film's trailer below.
