Elton John Said He Didn't Like the New 'Lion King' Soundtrack, and Beyoncé Fans Are Pissed

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 17, 2019

Elton John opened up about Disney's recent reboot of The Lion King, and he didn't have too many nice things to say.

John — who composed many of the songs for Disney's 1994 original — spoke about the 2019 reboot in a new interview with GQ, calling the film a "disappointment" and said that the studio "messed the music up."

"Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn't have the same impact," he said. "The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn't had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the bestselling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly."

For those who don't remember, the 2019 soundtrack featured re-recorded versions of songs from the original sung by cast members like Beyoncé and Donald Glover, as well as some brand new cuts like "Spirit" (and even a full Beyoncé companion album).

John didn't stop there, though. He went on to say that he believes that Lady Gaga is "the only real star" of this generation — despite cozying up to Beyoncé at The Lion King premiere earlier this year.

Naturally, the Beyhive isn't too pleased with John's recent comments. See some of their backlash below.
