Out of nowhere, news recently emerged that Dexter is coming back courtesy of Showtime and original showrunner Clyde Phillips. Now we're getting some details of what the upcoming revival has in store — in addition to promises to make the show's divisive ending "right."
To refresh you memory, Dexter ended back in 2013, with Season 8 capping off with a seriously controversial finale. Basically, the show's final episode saw star Michael C. Hall going into self-imposed self-isolation — a move that didn't sit well with a lot of fans.
Shedding light on what's in store for the revival, Phillips appeared on The Hollywood Reporter's "TV's Top 5" podcast, where he stated the upcoming series is not intended to simply act as Season 9. Instead, he said they are going to "start from scratch" and give us a "second finale" to "make that right."
Here's exactly what Phillips had to say:
We basically do get to start from scratch. We want this to not be Dexter Season 9. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It's a great opportunity to write a second finale. This is an opportunity to make that right. But that's not why we're doing it. We're not undoing anything. We're not going to betray the audience and say, "Whoops, that was all a dream." What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years.
As previously reported, Dexter is expected to return in fall 2021.
