Debra Messing Discusses Horrible Sexism on Set of 'A Walk in the Clouds'

Hollywood's terrible treatment of women is no secret, but it's still disheartening to hear horror stories from the industry. At this week's MAKERS conference, Debra Messing recalled the terrible situations she endured while shooting her first film A Walk in the Clouds.

As Vulture reports, the film's director Alfonso Arau was an absolute dick during the shooting. Messing was already nervous about shooting her first love scene with co-star Keanu Reeves, and Arau interrupted to make awful comments.

"We started filming and the very famous director screamed 'Cut' and said, 'How quickly can we get a plastic surgeon in here? Her nose is ruining my movie,'" the actress recalled. "I'd studied in London and I was so well-equipped with skill sets, and then to walk on set and have that happen — I was reduced to an un-Hollywood nose."

As if that weren't enough, Arau pressured Messing to agree to a previously unplanned nude scene on the spot. The director reportedly walked over to her onset, looked at her naked body and"dropped the sheet on top of me like a used Kleenex, then walked away without a word." Messing described the scenario as a "power play" intended to "demean me, strip me of my pride, my power."
