This week, Dave Franco will deliver his directorial debut with The Rental, a horror movie dropping on VOD tomorrow. While he's behind the lens on that one, however, Franco has a hefty acting role prepared for the future as he eyes the leading turn in a Vanilla Ice biopic.

In a new interview with Insider, Franco confirmed that the film is on its way. "We have been in development for a while but we are inching closer and closer to preproduction," he said.

The film was first announced in 2019 and has the following official description:

From a high school dropout selling cars in Dallas to having the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts with 'Ice Ice Baby,' a young Vanilla Ice struggles with stardom, extortion attempts, and selling out as he makes music history.

Franco added that the tone of the film will likely fall in line with The Disaster Artist, the film about The Room that he made with his brother James Franco.

"With that movie, people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was — that's the tone we want for this one as well," Franco said.

He also revealed that he's been hanging out with Vanilla Ice — real name Rob Van Winkle — to prepare for the role.

"Rob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he's been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn't know," Franco added. "Just talking to him I can't help but think about the rabbit holes I'm going to go down to get ready for the role."

The Vanilla Ice biopic doesn't have a start date for production just yet, but we'll keep you updated with more information as it becomes available.
