Dan Deacon has his new album Mystic Familiar coming out next month, but that's hardly the only project he has in store for us. In fact, Deacon has not one but two new film scores headed our way.
Deacon's first score actually arrives tonight on HBO, which will air the new documentary Well Groomed. Deacon provided all the music for the film, which is described as a look at "the exuberant world of competitive creative dog grooming and follows the lives of dog owners who are challenging the definition of art."
His second scoring project is for ESPN Films 30 for 30 short "Subject to Review." That airs this Sunday (December 22) and "takes a close look at not just the technology to improve the accuracy of calls during tennis matches, but the meaning and significance of that pursuit."
Along with a new Deacon-composed score, "Subject to Review" will feature the Mystic Familiar song "Bumble Bee Crown King."
"There are few things I enjoy more than scoring films and I feel so lucky to be able to do it," said Deacon in a statement. "Working on music for films allows me to enter totally new worlds and that takes my music in directions I'd otherwise never explore. The writing and recording process for the scores to Well Groomed and 'Subject to Review' were totally different in just about every way possible, not only because of the content of the films but because the style of the directors. That's the most rewarding part for me, the collaboration with new people and helping them tell the story."

Mystic Familiar — the follow-up to 2015's Gliss Riffer — will arrive January 31 through Domino. As previously reported, Deacon also has a lengthy tour coming up in support of the album. You can see all the dates here.
