Matthew A. Cherry — creator of Oscar-winning animated short film Hair Love — has signed a deal with HBO Max to create a new animated series based on his original short titled Young Love.
Along with Sony Pictures, HBO has picked up 12 episodes of the forthcoming series, which will follow the family from Hair Love as they "juggle careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues and multi-generational dynamics," according to Deadline.
"I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series," director/writer Cherry wrote of the acquisition in a statement.
So far, the showrunner has yet to announce any casting choices for the new project. Cherry's heart-wrenching original short starred Insecure's Issa Rae as its solo voice actor.
