Though horror movie fans have been steering clear of open manholes since the early '80s, it looks as if the C.H.U.D.'s are finally gonna get us. Or, rather, Martin Cooper and David Hughes' synthy score to the infamous '80s B-movie will be sliding onto turntables next month via Waxwork Records.
First teased at the end of 2014 as part of a subscription service, Waxwork now confirms that the record arrives October 3. This will be the first time Cooper and Hughes' music has been released in soundtrack form. Described as capturing "the seedy, grim landscape that embodied early 1980s NYC," the score was re-mixed and remastered using the original master tapes.
As is the standard with Waxwork releases, the C.H.U.D. soundtrack comes with newly curated artwork. Ghoulish Gary Pullin's piece was modelled after the original movie poster, which warned us of the arrival of the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. There's much less mist present in the new artwork, though.
The record comes housed in a gatefold sleeve and features new liner notes and an interview with film director Douglas Cheek, courtesy of Rue Morgue Magazine. As for vinyl variants, the score lands on both 180-gram "Toxic Waste Puddle vinyl" and 180-gram "C.H.U.D. Flesh with Blood Splatter." Pre-orders are being taken over here.
The film, about a underground group of toxic waste-mutated monsters terrorizing New York City, featured pre-fame appearances from actors John Goodman (Roseanne), Daniel Stern (Home Alone) and John Heard (also from Home Alone). You can listen to a few clips from the creepy score down below.
