Disney+ will soon begin production on its new Rogue One spinoff series, and it's now been reported that the content hub will do so with a new director.
According to Deadline, sources have confirmed that Toby Haynes will direct the show's first three episodes, replacing Tony Gilroy. Currently in pre-production, the Star Wars series is expected to begin shooting next month.
The site reports that Gilroy dropped off the project due to COVID-19 related travel reasons. With production soon due to begin in the U.K., Gilroy has ultimately made the decision to stay in New York, though he will remain on board as an executive producer and showrunner.
Haynes is best known for directing Emmy-winning Black Mirror episode "USS Callister," which opened the fourth season of Charlie Brooker's popular program. Last year, Haynes directed television drama film Brexit for HBO, while his other credits include Doctor Who, Sherlock and Being Human.
The yet-to-be-titled Star Wars series is said to follow Diego Luna's Cassian Andor character prior to the events of the 2016 Rogue One feature film. Luna will reprise his role as Andor, while Alan Tudyk will return as K-2SO. Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Genevieve O'Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller have also been attached to the series.
Meanwhile, a second season of The Mandalorian will arrive on Disney+ late next month.
