Charlie Brooker — the creator of beloved dystopia sci-fi series Black Mirror — is reviving his Wipe series for a new COVID-19 lockdown special. While details are still shaping up for the special instalment in his long-running series, the working title is Charlie Brooker's Antiviral Wipe.
This special edition of his Screenwipe brand will mark the first from Brooker's new production company Broke and Bones, and it will be a co-production with Endemol Shine UK. So far there is no premiere date for the COVID-19 special, but it will air on BBC Two.
According to the BBC, the special will feature Brooker taking "a typically sharp look at life in lockdown, in a show made during lockdown." The broadcaster also promises the return of Wipe regulars, Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan) and Barry Shitpeas (Al Campbell).
Before the success of Black Mirror, Brooker contributed multiple series of his BBC Wipe series, and he would run annual Wipe specials, though the last of those came way back in 2016.
In more recent years, Brooker claimed he was too busy to continue the annual Wipe instalments due to his commitments to Black Mirror, but he did regularly work with Diane Morgan on various Cunk series. The most recent of those arrived in December, with Cunk & Other Humans on 2019 working a pseudo year-end Wipe special.
