Wearing a mask in public has proven to be a crucial step the public can take to quell the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the visual learners out there, Bill Nye has shown just how effective face coverings can be — whether its a DIY sewing project to an industry-approved N95.

Nye has adapted his "Consider the Following" segment for TikTok, sharing a pair of videos in which he gives a basic overview on how fabric masks work to prevent the spread of particles between bodies. "Masks prevent particles from my respiratory system from getting into your respiratory system," he explains. "Blocking the movement of air is an old trick."

Using a variety of face coverings, Nye shows how much air is able to pass through each one by blowing on a burning candle. He begins with a scarf, before conducting his test with a homemade two-layer cotton mask, and finally an N95 respirator.

"The reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect you, sure, but the main reason we want you to wear a mask to protect me from you!," Nye reiterates. "This is literally a matter of life or death."
