Artists Stand with Standing Rock: Neil Young, Shailene Woodley, Chance the Rapper React to "No DAPL" Decision

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 5, 2016

After a long, hard-fought battle by protestors at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced yesterday (December 4) that the federal agency will not allow the Dakota Access Pipeline to be built under Lake Oahe.

Protests began at the site earlier this year, with thousands standing up to stop the construction of a pipeline they claimed would threaten the supply of clean drinking water and destroy sacred land.

Official government word dictates that pipeline owners Energy Transfer Partners LG should "explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing." It's still unclear how or if U.S. president-elect Donald Trump (who has in the past voiced support for the construction of the pipeline) will be able to reverse the Army Corps' ruling once in office, but the current government's support for those at Standing Rock is certainly a symbolic lesson about the power of protest.

Many who had been offering support to Standing Rock in recent months declared yesterday's decision a victory, and plenty of Hollywood personalities and musicians have since taken to social media to celebrate.
