Quentin Tarantino's cult classic Reservoir Dogs turns 25 this year, and during a celebratory screening and panel discussion at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend (April 28), the director revealed some little known trivia about the movie.
Joined by cast members Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Steve Buscemi, Tarantino reminisced about an audition for someone who didn't actually make it into the movie — Tom Waits.
"We met a lot of different, a lot of really wild people," Tarantino said [via The Playlist]. "Tom Waits came in and read. I had Tom Waits read the Madonna speech just so I could hear Tom Waits say it."
The audition was particularly memorable for Tarantino, as he received some of his earliest praise from Waits. Pulling off his best gravelly-voiced impression, the director recalled the musician saying, "The script is great, it's like poetry."
In his own voice, Tarantino added: "No one had ever called my work poetic before, by a poet no less."
Though he didn't get a role in Reservoir Dogs, Waits has since appeared on screen in films like Coffee and Cigarettes, Wristcutters: A Love Story and Seven Psychopaths — not to mention a cameo on The Simpsons.
