Adam West, the actor best known for playing the caped crusader in the campy 1960s version of Batman, has passed away. He was 88 years old.

According to a family spokesperson, West died after a brief battle with leukemia. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family. He's survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans' lives. He was and always will be our hero," West's family said in a statement.

Along with Batman, West was also known to contemporary audiences for voicing the mayor of Quahog in Family Guy. His long, illustrious career was also packed with plenty of westerns and television appearances prior to playing the iconic superhero.

West recently returned to his Batman role for a series of animated films. The latest, Batman vs. Two-Face, is currently in post-production.
