A 'Sicario' Sequel Is in the Works

Ever-busy director Denis Villeneuve offered up one of his best features to date with last year's excellent Sicario. Those who want to revisit that world hopefully won't have to wait too long, as a sequel is reportedly in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Label Media producers Molly Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill have already got a Sicario sequel in the works.

"We're in full development with the studio," Smith said. "I just got a draft [of a script from writer Taylor Sheridan], and we're really excited."

Trent Luckinbill added that Sheridan has made it possible for them to revisit the story easily. "Taylor's a really great world-builder," he said. "He's got that kind of modern Western voice, which is in vogue right now. And he did it again [with the sequel]. It's a great big world."

Better yet, the entire cast from the original is set to return. "We can't reveal the plot, but you'll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back," Trent added. "You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it's a perfect foray for us to explore."

That said, it's still unclear whether or not Villeneuve will find time in his schedule to direct the Sicario sequel. "Obviously we would love it if Denis could [direct]," Trent said. "He's a busy man, but he's certainly part of the process with us right now."
