Exclusive: Swollen Members Getting Set for Performance at 2010 Olympics
10/19/2009 By Andrea Woo

If all goes according to plan, Vancouver’s Swollen Members will perform at an official Olympics event when the city hosts the 2010 Winter Games this February.

“It looks pretty good right now,” the hip-hop group’s Prevail told Exclaim! in an interview. “Our ex-agent called us and he’s been on the Olympic committee for the last couple of years. He said he was interested in getting us a good, prime slot. Of course, being from the city, we’re quite excited and quite honoured to have the chance to do a show of that magnitude.”

Mad Child echoed the sentiment, saying, “I’ll be really excited about getting to perform during the Olympics because then I’ll get to spend a couple days checking out what’s going on. I’m hoping we get the opportunity.”

As previously reported, several Canadian and international acts have been announced to play the upcoming Games, including Wilco, Broken Social Scene, Sun Kil Moon and Steve Earle. However, the details of Swollen Members’ likely performance have yet to be confirmed.

“The scheduling is just around the corner so things will start to reveal themselves in the next couple days,” Prevail said.

Swollen Members’ sixth studio album, Armed to the Teeth, is due out on October 27.

Whimsical curmudgeon Stephin Merritt is undeniably one of the most significant artists of the past 20 years. A clever wordsmith equally devoted to Human League and Cole Porter, Merritt's nascent musical explorations produced the lo-fi, synthesized sound of the Magnetic Fields. Even then, with his intellectual interest in diverse pop and folk instrumentation and the timeless art of charming, sentimental songs, glimmers of a contemporary pop genius shone through....
