Members of Prefuse 73, Tortoise, Battles, Hella and More Collaborate in New Supergroup, Indie Rock Fans Lose Their Collective Shit

In what could be the most self-indulgent (in the best possible way) indie rock supergroup of all time, the mad genius behind Prefuse 73, Guillermo Scott Herren, has recruited Hella's Zach Hill, John McEntire of Tortoise, Battles' Tyondai Braxton, School of Seven Bells' Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis, as well as Eva Puyuelo Muns and Robert Carlos Lange of Savath & Savalas for a new ambient project called Risil.

According to their MySpace page, “Risil is a band of 1,000 alternating members with a foundation of 13,” so the exact line-up of the supergroup seems to be a revolving door of Herren’s musician friends.

And we know the term “supergroup” has been bandied about way too much lately, New Order/Blur amalgam Bad Lieutenant being the most recent example (even though we didn’t use the label ourselves). But, really, putting guys from Prefuse 73, Tortoise, Battles and Hella in the same room is the weirdo indie rock equivalent of Robert Plant, Ritchie Blackmore, Geezer Butler and Keith Moon jamming it out in the early ‘70s hard rock scene. Both scenarios involve copious amounts of LSD.

Due for release on July 23 on Important (Acid Mothers Temple, Merzbow, Holy Sons) with the above cover, Non Meters Vol. 1 is the first Risil album of a trilogy and was recorded during a time when Herren has been so prolific with Prefuse 73 and his other countless projects, we’re starting to lose track of all of his recent releases.
