Radio One's Rob Da Bank Makes Shoegaze Mix For Soma Records' Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi Series
1/8/2009 By Cam Lindsay

BBC Radio One DJ Rob Da Bank (aka Robert Gorham) is the latest in line to curate a mix for the third volume in Soma Records' Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi series. Unlike most of the Scottish label's more electronic-oriented comps, however, Rob's will focus on the sound of shoegazing.

Shoegazing 1985 - 2007, as its subtitled, follows a chronological arc that begins with the Jesus & Mary Chain and ends with Dean & Britta, which of course, offers up a good debate of what actually falls under the "shoegaze" umbrella. However, staples of the genre such as Ride, Slowdive and Pale Saints all make the mix, as well as latter day "nu-gazers" such as Ulrich Schnauss, Maps and M83.

Da Bank's mix follows up efforts by Andrew Weatherall (rare, classic garage rock and post-punk) and Damian Lazarus (leftfield pop and electronic). Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi: Compiled By Rob Da Bank (Shoegazing 1985 - 2007) will be released on March 16.

"I pretty much had a meltdown," Owen Pallett admits, laughing ruefully. "This record took a lot out of me." The 30-year-old violin genius didn't name his third full-length album Heartland for nothing. It's all blood, guts, emotion, and his own money that Pallett's poured into the epic, orchestral release, a project that was four years in the making, and according to some anxious and critical fans, long overdue....
