The Bicycles - Toronto, ON February 12
By Scott TavenerToronto joy pop outfit, the Bicycles brought their bubblegum-indebted shtick out of retirement for Wavelength 500, overseeing the most spirited dance party of the evening, thanks largely to the cannon-blast drumming of Dana Snell (aka Laura Barrett's flautist). Jubilant and partly moustached, the five-piece started the room bouncing with leadoff, "B-B Bicycle," and kept morale lofty throughout. Touching on doo wop and twee pop - admittedly more Belle and Sebastian than the Softies - but throwing in some dirty riffs and Pixies touchstones for a nice dose of machismo, the adorable outfit played a rollicking show. Hopefully, it won't be their last.
