Danuel Tate - SAT, Montreal QC June 2
By Vincent PollardWith the rained-out Experience session forced indoors, the vibe felt less laid-back and more intense as a result of the more confined space. As a result, the set from Cobblestone Jazz member Danuel Tate was more overtly electronic and markedly different from his performance in the same space for 2011's MUTEK, sounding more techno, electro and, overall, intense. Some fantastic Herbie Hancock-esque keyboard parts aside, it was less jazz-tinged and organic than Tate's previous sets. At one point, he had some frustration with feedback that he couldn't ascertain the source of, and when he accidentally sent a blast of static into the crowd, he joked, "They should label that shit." But nothing gets an audience onside more than a recovery following technical failure, and the remainder of his set was fantastic. Almost everybody in the crowd was smiling as they watched Tate's incredibly dextrous set, while he himself grinned, danced and occasionally grimaced when things went slightly awry. It was all very hands-on, with vocals put through the vocoder and some great keyboard playing, making Tate incredibly fun to watch.
