Sonorous Odium - Reclamation
By Denise FalzonEdmonton, AB melodic death metal band Sonorous Odium have a powerful atmosphere. The trio's five-song debut EP, Reclamation, contains a wide range of elements borrowed from Scandinavian death metal, black metal and doom, which come together to create a cohesive, yet well-rounded, sound. Melodic guitar work and heavy rhythms are paired especially well on opener "Manmade," and vocalist Curtis Vieville's ominously harsh roars contrast nicely with the eerie beauty of guitarist Wally Fischer's leads. Clearly influenced by the likes of Hypocrisy and Opeth, Sonorous Odium have mastered the art of melodious death metal, as each track on Reclamation is intriguing and memorable while containing just enough brutality to still be considered death metal. Hopefully the band will be able to hold listeners' attention long enough to overcome the pressures of a full-length.
