By Max MertensProof that long distance relationships work, TNGHT are the brainchild of Montreal's Lunice and Glasgow's Hudson Mohawke, who met in 2008 when the latter played a party booked by the former. After a buzzed-about performance at SXSW this year, and a handful of praised BBC Radio 1 mixes, the duo have finally released their first EP. Listening to the six hip-hop instrumentals, which recall both Timbaland in his prime and Lex Luger's chest-rattling aggressive beats, it's no surprise the two producers have been getting requests for work from the likes of Kanye West and Waka Flocka Flame. The highlight is the hyperkinetic "Bugg'n," which works in a baby's cry over relentless steel drums and kick, and should have both established and YouTube MCs tripping over themselves to record rhymes for. Lunice and Mohawke have admitted in interviews that they drank a great deal of whiskey while making these songs, but this EP is better suited as the soundtrack to drinking vodka and Red Bull at the club. Clocking in at just less than 16 minutes, it's a high-octane rush of a debut that leaves you wanting more.
