La Sangre Illuminada
By Vincent PollardMexican-born Murcof (aka Fernando Corona) burst onto the electronica scene almost a decade ago with his modern classical-meets-IDM masterpiece Martes. La Sangre Illuminada marks his sixth solo album. It was originally released in Mexico on independent label Intolerancia, but this time receives an international release, including vinyl pressings, courtesy of French label Infiné. It was composed as a soundtrack for the film of the same name by Mexican director Iván Ávila Dueñas, but works well as a standalone album. The film (in English, "The Enlightened Blood"), centres upon six characters sequentially inhabited by the same soul and the tracks are named after each of them. This is an intense and immersive album constructed of layers of sombre cello, sparse piano and glitchy electronics, resulting in a tense ambience. Hearing it is somewhat like lying on a beach, waves gently lapping at your feet, but with your head in a wasp nest.
