By Andrea AyotteWith only a handful of EPs under his belt, Canadian producer Hobo (aka Joel Boychuk) releases his first full-length album, Iron Triangle, on Richie Hawtin's label, Minus. Raised in Sarnia, ON, only a few hours away from Detroit, Hobo's musical inspirations are rooted in his memories and experiences around his hometown and the three significant train lines surrounding this area. Iron Triangle opens with "Blackwell," an eerie, Detroit-inspired, machine-driven techno track that includes a 60-second atmospheric interlude that sounds like it belongs in a horror movie. "Here Comes Everybody" is a playful techno track incorporating weird, stretched-out, spiralling acid sounds intertwined with manipulated echoes for a mesmerizing textural journey. "Sundown" closes the album with a well-produced, straight-up dark techno number that's bound to satisfy any dance floor. Formally part of Minus duo Tractile, Hobo manages to deliver lively mechanical rhythms referencing Windsor's iron triangle. (M-nus)
