Eskmo - Language
By Vincent PollardEskmo (aka San Francisco, CA's Brendan Angelides) has been putting out his solid production on labels such as Ninja Tune and Warp for over a decade now. With so much quality electronic music being produced on both sides of the Atlantic, listening to Eskmo's music, you can't shake the feeling that it's maybe a little mailed-in. Moments such as centrepiece "Soul Music" points to how well Eskmo has honed his production skills, but with everyone and their dog putting out similar beats, with chopped'n'skewed vocal samples, Angelides needs to pull something bigger out of the bag to get to a point where he can deliver something that makes an impact. Even so, the EP does hold several moments of interest, such as closing track "Oh, In This World Of Dread, Carry On," which comes across like an electronic take on Explosions in the Sky.
