The Weeknd - Outdoor Theatre, Indio CA April 15
By Max MertensHow many 22-year-old singer-songwriters can say they played their first U.S. show at Coachella? One of the most eagerly anticipated Canadian acts of the weekend, Toronto's the Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) took to the Outdoor Stage to a sea of cheering fans and waving cellphones, as the sun set into the Californian desert on Sunday. Opening with "High for This" and his haunted cover of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana," Tesfaye's voice sounded strong as he moved across the stage with confidence, making it clear that he's come a long way since his first Ontario shows. Performing material from all three of his mix tapes, the songs sounded bulked up with the addition of a full band, while Tesfaye remained grinning from ear-to-ear the entire time.
