Slash: An Intimate Portrait - By Robert Knight
By Daniel PrattHaving photographed some of rock'n'roll's biggest names over the years – Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Slash and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name a few – Robert Knight has solidified his position in the world of rock photography as one of the greatest. Yet, for all of the legends he has worked with, it is Slash that he has remained a close personal friend with for more than 20 years.

Knight's friendship with the Guns 'N Roses guitarist has given him a look at the artist beyond his signature top hat and long flowing mane, leading to the release of Slash: An Intimate Portrait, which contains more than 100 previously unreleased photographs of Slash, in addition to personal stories that paint a picture of the man behind the guitar.

The book takes fans beyond the mystique of the musician to reveal the warmth and charm of one of the world's most revered rockers. Tracing Slash's journey of working with other artists outside of G'N R—Michael Jackson, Fergie, Iggy Pop, Lenny Kravitz and Velvet Revolver—Knight's photographs trace Slash's career milestones over a 20-year span.

While the personal anecdotes reveal a new dimension to the rocker, it's the photographs that ground and propel the story. Concert photos, backstage shots, jam sessions with Slash's bands and behind-the-scenes shots show a different side of a man that fans may be unfamiliar with.

The book also features an insightful foreword from Slash's close friend, the Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood, as well as a witty preface from Aerosmith's Joe Perry and text by noted rock scribe, Richard Bienstock. Resultantly, the overly comprehensive Slash: An Intimate Portrait makes a great collectible for fans of the famed guitarist and the photography of Robert Knight.
