The Weakerthans' John K. Samson Explores Manitoba with 'Provincial' Solo Album
By Alex HudsonIn addition to penning literary indie rock anthems as the frontman of the Weakerthans, songwriter John K. Samson has released seven-inch records about roads in his home province of Manitoba. These low-key three-song releases have now spawned a full-length, Provincial, due out January 24 via Epitaph Records.

According to a press release, the collection includes newly recorded versions of the songs from the seven-inches, plus unheard tracks. These highly region-specific tunes include "songs about dying villages, Icelandic longing, snowplows, broken glass, satellites, hockey skates, and staff room romances." Among them is the past favourite "Petition," which is about Reggie Leach's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Along with the new album, Samson will be embarking on a U.S. solo tour in March and April. Look for more U.S. and Canadian dates to be announced soon.
