By Gregory AdamsHeavy metal radio show Powerchord is a Vancouver institution. Founded by hosts Metal Ron and Gerald Rattlehead in 1985, the program, which runs every Saturday on the University of British Columbia radio station CiTR 101.9 FM, has been a haven for independent metal for over 25 years. Realizing Powerchord is Vancouver's longest-running heavy metal radio show, current hosts Geoff "The Metal Pimp," Marcia "The Mistress of Metal" Downham and Andy have decided to throw a big, headbangin' bash.
The program will host an anniversary party at the Rickshaw Theatre in East Vancouver on May 21 that will feature a number of thrashin' acts. Ontario doom outfit Woods of Ypres will headline the festivities, while locals Titans Eve, Scissortooth, Scythia, Magnus Rising and Auroch. Get on your black leather and spiked gauntlets, because it's going to be a raging good time.
But while the party toasts Powerchord, the hosts are just as ready to celebrate Lotus Land's underground metal community.
"Powerchord would not have been able to continue without all the loyal metal fans and array of metal talent, which reigns in BC," Downham said in a statement. "The fact that Powerchord has been able to continue running for 25 years is a huge feat in the history of Canadian metal proving that no matter how many challenges we face, the metal scene in Vancouver is strong and will continue to bang on for a long time to come."
