By Alex HudsonWhile the summer months are filled with weekend-long festivals and music extravaganzas, there's no other program quite like Montreal's Piknic Electronik, which plays out as a series of weekly shows running from May all the way until September. The organizers of the annual series have now confirmed the details of their 2013 season.
The series will kick off with a special two-night double-header, as Leftroom Records will host an event on May 19 (featuring Matt Tolfrey and Laura Jones), and Carl Craig appears on May 20. From there, Piknic Electronik runs every Sunday all the way until September 22, with performers including Dave Clarke (May 26), Radio Slave (September 22), M.A.N.D.Y. (August 25), Tiga (June 24), Guy Gerber (July 7) and Pilooski (July 14). Misstress Barbara leads the bill on a three-night event on Labour Day weekend (August 31 to September 2).
There will also be showcases from some Canadian institutions like Casbour Records (May 20), MUTEK (June 2), Turbo Records (June 24), Sound in Motion Festival (June 30), and Microzoo Records (August 18). On June 23, Piknic Electronik will pay tribute to Montreal's '90s after-hours culture with an event themed after the nightclub Sona.
Piknic Electronik is held at Montreal's Parc Jean-Drapeau. Two special Saturday shows on July 6 and 13 will be free. See the full weekly lineup over at Piknic Electronik's website.
