Pearl Jam and U2 Documentaries Heading to TIFF 2011; Pearl Jam Twenty Release Details Announced
By Alex HudsonWe can always count of the Toronto International Film Festival to feature some excellent musical attractions. Last year's event included a live film score from Do Make Say Think, plus a star-studded hockey musical. Now, the organizers have announced that the 2011 instalment, which runs from September 8 to 18, will include documentaries about U2 and Pearl Jam.

U2 is the focus of David Guggenheim's From the Sky Down. This film will kick off the festival of September 8, marking the first time in TIFF's 36-year history that a documentary has opened the event.

In a statement [via Citytv], Guggenheim said, "In the terrain of rock bands -- implosion or explosion is seemingly inevitable. U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction; this band has endured and thrived. The movie From the Sky Down asks the question why."

The festival will also feature Cameron Crowe's hotly anticipated documentary Pearl Jam Twenty, which will be screened on September 10. We already knew that the movie would be airing on PBS in October, but TIFF will give us a chance to check out the film a month early.

A press release notes that the film will later arrive in select theatres for one night only on September 20. After that, a week-long widespread run will begin on September 23. A DVD will follow on October 25. The soundtrack to the film will be on shelves on September 20 via Columbia/Sony, and the Pearl Jam Twenty book will come out a week before, on September 13.

Of course, TIFF has plenty of non-music attractions too, and the organizers have announced dozens of films that will be included in this year's program. Head over to the festival website to get the scoop and find information about purchasing tickets.
