Louise Burns Unveils 'The Midnight Mass,' Premieres New Song
By Alex HudsonLouise Burns previously spoke with Exclaim! about her upcoming sophomore album, which was produced Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, the New Pornographers, Black Mountain) and the Raveonettes' Sune Rose Wagner. Now, the Vancouver pop songwriter has officially announced The Midnight Mass, which is due out on July 9 through Light Organ Records.

In a statement, Burns said, "I went back to the music I first fell in love with. Which was the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, all of my favourite influences."

You'll certainly hear some of those goth-y '80s influences in lead single "Emeralds Shatter," which is steeped in synth drama and Disintegration-style guitar echoes. Hear that song below.

Other sonic touchstones on the album reportedly include Berlin-era David Bowie, Scott Walker, Suicide, Townes Van Zandt and the Shangri-Las. There's also a cover of the Gun Club's "Mother of Earth."

Burns said, "It doesn't feel like a big change for me. I'm a pop writer."

Burns previously told Exclaim! that the album was recorded at Vancouver-area studio Hive Creative Labs with additional sessions in Los Angeles. Contributors include Cat Power's Gregg Foreman on guitar, Ladyhawk's Darcy Hancock on guitar, Dum Dum Girls' Sandy (aka Sandra Vu) on drums, Brasstronaut's Brennan Saul on drums, Sun Wizard's James Younger on guitar, and Fond of Tigers' Jesse Zubot on violin.

This is the follow-up to 2011's Polaris long-listed Mellow Drama.
