Dark Was the Night Raises $1 Million for Charity
By Gregory AdamsLast year saw the release of the mammoth Dark Was the Night compilation. The two-disc set, curated by the National's Bryce and Aaron Dessner, brought together a multitude of artists, including Spoon, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, among others, to raise funds for the Red Hot Organization, a non-profit dedicated to fighting AIDS. On top of being an all-out awesome record, the set was a success in raising a lot of money for the cause.

With today (December 1) being World AIDS Day, 4AD, the label that distributed the disc, has announced that thus far, Dark Was The Night has raised $1 million, which will be distributed to a number of AIDS-related charities.

Each recipient was chosen by a musician involved in the project. A full list of the charities can be seen here.

A press release finds Aaron Dessner appreciative to all the musicians and music fans that contributed to making the project a success.

"We want to thank all of the artists and everyone at 4AD again for helping us make Dark Was the Night happen," Dessner said. "We also want to thank everyone who has bought this record -- your donations amount to a very significant contribution to Red Hot's mission: fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS."
