Elvis Costello's Message to Fans about Expensive New Box Set: Don't Buy It
By Gregory AdamsLast month, we learned about Elvis Costello's fancy new box set, Elvis Costello & the Imposters: The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!, which, among other things, packages a recent live performance in L.A. last May with a DVD, a deluxe booklet and a spinning-wheel that replicated the set-list selector used on his last tour. It's impressive, for sure, but considering its cost (currently sitting at $224.39 on Amazon), Costello is urging you to spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere.

A blog post on the singer-songwriter's website explains that Team Costello has been fighting about the package's price point, but have finally given up on making the set more affordable.

"Unfortunately, we at www.elviscostello.com find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire," the statement says.

Instead, the site urges you to buy a Louis Armstrong set called Ambassador of Jazz, a collection housed in an imitation suitcase featuring ten of the trumpeter's albums. The set, which currently sports the lower tag of $209.23, is also being touted as being better than Costello's latest.

"Frankly, the music is vastly superior," the statement continues.

Costello is reminding everyone, however, that more reasonably priced versions of the set should sometime next year, should you be able to hold out until then.

"If on the other hand you should still want to hear and view the component parts of the above mentioned elaborate hoax, then those items will be available separately at a more affordable price in the new year, assuming that you have not already obtained them by more unconventional means."

The extravagantly priced Elvis Costello & the Imposters: The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!, meanwhile, comes out December 6 through Universal.
