By Alex HudsonYesterday (October 23), the annual Western Canadian Music Awards took place in Whitehorse. As usual, the event honoured the year's best music to come out of the provinces and territories in the western half of our country.
Unlike last year, when Dan Mangan dominated with three awards, this year's prizes were spread around a little more evenly. The only multiple award winner was Winnipeg's Juno-nominated folksinger Del Barber, who took home both Independent Album of the Year and Roots Solo Recording of the Year.
Other notable winners included: Imaginary Cities for Pop Recording of the Year, the Sheepdogs for Rock Recording of the Year, Sweatshop Union for Rap/Hip-Hop Recording of the Year, the Wailin' Jennys for Roots Duo/Group Recording of the Year and Romi Mayes for Songwriter of the Year.
