Dan Mangan Comes Out on Top at Western Canadian Music Awards
By Alex HudsonWell, isn't this familiar? Two years ago, Dan Mangan cleaned house at the Western Canadian Music Awards by taking home three prizes. This weekend, the husky-voiced Vancouver songwriter again dominated the awards ceremony, once more with three wins.

At the ceremony, which took place on Sunday (September 30) at Casino Regina in Regina, SK, Mangan took home top honours for Songwriter of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and Independent Album of the Year, making him the year's only act to win in multiple categories.

Some other notable winners include Jill Barber (Jazz Recording of the Year), the Deep Dark Woods (Roots Duo/Group Recording of the Year), Sarah MacDougall (Roots Solo Recording of the Year), Swollen Members (Rap/Hip-Hop Recording of the Year) and Carly Rae Jepsen (Pop Recording of the Year). In addition to the Music Awards, Breakout West also hosted the Western Canadian Music Industry Awards. Best indie label went to Mint Records, while Said the Whale won a prize for best album design (for Little Mountain, designed by Andy Dixon and Jonathan Taggart). The event was hosted by Grant Lawrence, and the Northern Pikes were named the year's Hall of Fame recipients. Performers at the gala included Dan Mangan, Sarah MacDougall and Indian City.
