Canada's New Foreign Labour Laws vs. the Music Industry, the Return of Jack White's Dead Weather and the Passing of Caspian's Chris Friedrich in Our News Roundup
By Brock ThiessenThis weekend is one of mixed emotions. On the downside, it marks the unofficial end of summer. But on the plus side, we get a long weekend out of the deal. While you struggle with that one, we've gathered up the week's top stories to help take your mind off things, if only for a moment.

First off, Canada's newly revealed foreign labour laws ruffled a whole lot of feathers this week in the music industry, and for good reason. In a nutshell, under the new laws, Canadian venues and bookers will be on the hook for an increased fee of $425.00 charge per international artist, per performance in Canada — something that's a whole lot higher than the previous fees. An online petition urging against the new law has already collected more than 92,000 supporters, proving that this one definitely touched a nerve.

In more positive news here in Canada, Eamon McGrath launched his new serialized album, the Pack A.D. revealed their newest full-length and Drake got his dad to contribute to Nothing Was the Same. It was also a busy week for the Sadies' Dallas Good, who joined hardcore unit Career Suicide onstage in Toronto and revealed the Sadies would be teaming up with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet to cover all of Alice Cooper's Love It to Death.

In other news, Caspian's Chris Friedrich sadly passed away, Danny Brown gave us a firm release date and a pile of guests for Old, Jack White started working with the Dead Weather again and Paul McCartney announced a new album.

Last but not least, if you ever wondered what would happen if you crossed Sonic Youth with Breaking Bad, it might be something like this.
