The album was recorded with producer Roger Leavens (Woodhands, the Rural Alberta Advantage) at Boombox Sound in Toronto. The songs were demoed over the course of three years, with some of them coming together in a farmhouse in rural Ontario. Others were written by Lalonde on his laptop in a variety of locales.
See footage of Born Ruffians in the studio in the video embedded at the bottom of this page. "With Her Shadow" is also streaming below. Additionally, the band filmed various video blogs during their time at the farmhouse, and these can be seen at their YouTube channel.
In a statement, bassist Mitch DeRosier said, "We don't want to tell you about what we think we sound like. We can tell you that this record will sound different. These songs lived with us, toured with us, got drunk with us and made our ears ring. Now, we get to hit the road and start making your ears ring."
In the lead-up to Birthmarks, Born Ruffians will hit the road in Canada. Scroll past the tracklist to check out the schedule, which finds the band traveling from coast to coast in the coming months.
