AIDS Wolf Call It Quits
By Gregory AdamsFollowing nine years of unstructured sonic chaos, Montreal noise punks AIDS Wolf have announced that they're breaking up. The trio play their final three shows this May.

News of the implosion came earlier this week via a Facebook event labelled "AIDS Wolf final gig," which is to take place at Montreal's Casa del Popolo on May 5. The band have since bookended the performance with a show in Sherbrooke, QC at Sporoble on May 4 and an as-yet-unfinalized Toronto gig on May 11.

It's unclear as to why the AIDS Wolf have decided to call it quits, but a brief statement sent to Exclaim! cryptically reads, "There's always a reason... everything for a reason."

Since their inception in 2003, AIDS Wolf issued abrasive and arty full-lengths for the influential Skingraft imprint, released splits with Athletic Automaton, Pre and the Fugue, among others, and delivered a number of self-released CD-Rs and tapes.

AIDS Wolf went through a handful of lineup changes over the years, with vocalist Chloe Lum and drummer Yannick Desranleau being the only constants throughout their career. Guitarist Alex Moskos linked up with the unit for their 2009 tour tape Pas Rapport.

The group report that Moskos will continue making music for his solo project Drainolith, while Lum and Desranleau will be focusing on visual art full time. The pair have worked under the Seripop banner since 2002.

AIDS Wolf's final album was the sprawling double-LP Ma Vie Banale Avant Garde, which was released last October on Lovepump United.

"There's always a reason"...yeah, like that the noise-rock bubble has burst and consequently no-one gives a fuck about your band's "avante-garde" bullshit anymore. should have learned to write actual songs, assholes.

Why don't you go back to your fucking MacBook and listen to some artsy-fartsy synth pop, you piece of shit.

AIDS WOLF is forever in my heart.
Start Conversation
Aaaand with only two comments our collective opinions are pretty much summed up.
Start Conversation
I'm really sad to see AIDS Wolf go. They were one of the hardest working bands in Canada and had the best live show I've ever seen. They played with an unparalleled ferocity and had the conviction and ethos to take things to the next cerebral level.

A true rarity.
Start Conversation
One of my favourite live bands ever, all the best to the AW crew in the future.
A sad day for Experimental Canadian Music.
Start Conversation
One of the best Canadian bands in years. Sad to see them go.
Start Conversation
good riddance!

booooooooooooooooooooring.
Start Conversation
THey were jerks.
Start Conversation
and nothing of value was lost.
Start Conversation
horrible band. just trash.
Start Conversation
an asset to the canadian music community's identity ,, gone, its sad
Start Conversation
Awesome band, awesome people, just awesome! Thanks AIDSwolf for unfettering our fetters and uninhibiting our inhibitors! Looking forward to your next round of post-AIDSwolf sonic adventures!
Start Conversation
We had to break up to get Exclaim to talk about Ma Vie Banale .
Start Conversation
if people hated them, they succeeded. if people loved them, they succeeded. bon voyage.
Start Conversation
Good, they had no fucking talent whatsoever. Good riddance, you won't be missed
Start Conversation
In any case, noise is absurd, but no less than re-hashing some idiotic social schema funded by EMI 20 years ago. The people that heckle AIDS WOLF probably still go to shows thinking they're going to "relate" to someone
Start Conversation
It's not really the banal music or lack of talent (I point my finger at all these art stars that play "musician", like dna, teenage jesus, aids wolf et al.. and announce that the emperor wears no clothes), rather it's the complete douchebaggery displayed by the members. If you can't actually play, it's a parody, so you might as well be nice. I supect that 9 years has burned too many bridges. Good riddance, Chloe, you nasty talentless little pig. Everyone hates you and your band. A success! A legacy of hate! Glad you're going back to silkscreening rainbow puke cartoon people for corporate money.
Start Conversation
Is it me or most of these comments come from douchebags?

my god...

Sad to see them go!

roche dessus AW!
Start Conversation
Hey Chloe, Exclaim did talk about Ma Vie Banale. See the link in this story.
Start Conversation
My mistake , they mention it existing, we just couldn't get it reviewed.
Start Conversation
obsess much? wow, chloe true to form here you are, dissing exclaim when they are giving you press. what more do you want?
Start Conversation
I thought this band was dead for many years. What an horrible band and a horrible name. Good riddance.
Start Conversation
There is a chance Ma Vie Banale wasn't serviced to Exclaim!. It does happen. I can attest to this.
Start Conversation
Terrible band, terrible people and why the fuck did anyone ever equate the ability to make a show poster with their (lack of) ability to play instruments?
Start Conversation
relating to cam's comment /// are we to assume that exclaim only covers music that is "serviced" to them//// do none of the writers in the group act on initiative and bring material to light that isn't being actively self promoted??? that's sad. i guess that's why exclaim just seems like one big advertisement rather than a real piece of music journalism where readers can discover new and unheard of artists //// sorry for getting off track of the aids wolf thing,,, i think their active self promotion kinda shot them in the foot, people who like that kind of music don;t want to see it in the weeklies and have it shoved in their face , i will miss them though,,, no one sounded like aids wolf and if you think that's untrue then you have no ear for modern abtract rock you ego stroking unsure of your own worth piss-ant,xo
Start Conversation
hey balls... go suck mine.
Start Conversation
Never listened to this band but they sure seemed to piss of a lot of people!
Start Conversation
I think Cam's point more is that it's difficult for a magazine to review a record when you never get a copy. Sure, writers can take it upon themselves to go hunt down a copy somewhere or more likely download it (illegally), but it's not really fair to slam a publication if that doesn't happen.
Start Conversation
Plus, Exclaim! did take it upon themselves to write about the record. Apparently, though, they just didn't write about it enough.
Start Conversation
Wow, I'm pretty impressed that AIDS Wolf can get people so riled up and mad about their musical ability. When was the last time that happened? The Sex Pistols? I wish that sucky band The Beatles had learned to play their instruments the way AIDS Wolf does, then maybe I'd like their music. So glad AIDS Wolf don't write "actual songs." Actual songs are booooring.

Totally mystified by people mad at the AIDS Wolf members personally, they've always been such kind & generous sweethearts. Did they say your band was boring once? No need to take it so personally, huh?

I'll miss AIDS Wolf! Best Canadian band!
Start Conversation
Oh Balls, I'm sure if Chloe even so much as gave you the time of day you'd have a different opinion of her - it's probably better she didn't though, you sound like a fucking idiot.
Start Conversation
People don't understand what AIDS Wolf did because they expect music to be made for them. They expect the artistic space in which music is made to be identical to the space of their expectations. This is a sad alienation. R.I.P AIDS Wolf.
Start Conversation
exclaim got sent the album. so stop talking about it.
Start Conversation
if your gonna be a noise punk band why not try something interesting like using non band instruments like pots and buckets and maybe some toy keyboards or horns. The electric guitar and bass has been done way too much. its just not interesting anymore. sonic youth did it. blonde redhead did it, among many other bands. It seems silly that it took 9 years for them to figure out that you cant live off being a purist "noise punk" band. Sure making new noises is fun, but to the average bar patron or music lover, its just noise. sorry. should have played art shows or found a audience that would appreciate your sound. Playing a bar or venue, you have to entertain people and if your sound is something that sounds like people who cant play their instruments. dont be mad that people dont wanna stick around. good luck and keep on rockn.
Start Conversation
I clearly don't understand people. I could hate a band with every ounce of my soul, and I wouldn't comments like some of these.

It's fucking art people, you don't have to like it, but it would be nice if you could show some respect for the process.
Start Conversation
Chloe's an ignorant and elitist cunt. Not to mention having to watch her on stage just playing with her glasses, what a bore. Should have quit first release out after all the buzz which only came from having a stupid band name. Just hope she becomes a recluse so I don't have to listen to her complain of all the woes of being in a shitty band that no one cared about at shows I actually want see.
Start Conversation
hey bdazz... sonic youth? blonde redhead? pretty sad reference points and belies your poor grasp of the milieu that aids wolf worked in. and regarding your comment that as an artist "you have to entertain people"... i'm glad that a lot of artists DON'T follow that principle you propose. if i recall, if (your saints) sonic youth had followed your advice, they'd not be the convenient (and inaccurate) trope you pulled out your ass. please go back to weeping that thurston and kim are divorcing and reading pitchfork reviews.

yeah, fuck aids wolf. totally pretentious poseurs
Start Conversation
ah, nothing like annoying anonymous posters. here's a dollar guys, buy a clue... 10 years from now when another generation of up-and-coming noise scrappers raise their heads, aids wolf will be a seminal band and you old fuck naysayers will be prattling on about how you got to see them "back in the day" to boost your sagging indie cred (and asses) at the bar.

nobody cares, huh? re-read the comments, dummycakes.
Start Conversation
I hesitated posting anything here, but reading these comments is very upsetting. A lot of you people are so incredibly ignorant, and have no respect.
Aids Wolf were great. They were a very hardworking band, making excellent, and challenging music, and doing things their own way. Not to mention being very nice down to earth people, which is very rare these days. They were always an inspiration to me. And they were very respected by people who actually know something about interesting music.

BALLS, THANK YOU whoever else, your quite the internet tough guys, which usually means big wimps sitting in his moms basement mouthing off. I'd like to see you say these horrible things in person, where you'd have to answer for your statements, not just hiding behind the internet like some little wussies. fuck you !! get a life!! i'd like to hear your fucking music !! oh wait, i dont. keep it away from me !!

I'm really not surprised exclaim ignored the last Aids Wolf record (which is amazing ) Exclaim doesn't care about music. And judging by these lovely messages, the people who read it don't either. Exclaim sucks. All they care about is pushing the latest flavor of the month buzz band shit and selling ad space to booze and cigarette companies, so they call sell crap to morons like these people who buy into their BS. Of course they're gonna ignore real and interesting records, they always do.They even admit to how lame they are above. 'We weren't serviced with the record' gimme a break. The Toronto Sun or the national enquirer has more cred than them. At least they're a bit more honest about being total sleaze. Instead Exclaim hides behind the banner ' Canada's music authority' (thats a pretty bold, poorly thought out statement for such a terrible mag) This really sucks guys, we lost a very interesting, and powerful group here. Go back and listen to the arcade fire or grimes or whatever and think your totally hip and with it. Fuck you !!
Start Conversation
Nice one, Wolfgod. You've successfully demonstrated that Aids Wolf fans are just as dick-ish as their detractors. Glad to see you are not ignorant, show respect and do not hide behind the internet!
Start Conversation
maybe exclaim is funded by factor that's why they have to cover all the lame music that factor supports /// thank goodness for weird canada an actual authority on canadian music , i must say all the criticism thus far seems very uneducated in the sphere that aids wold created in, there is little to no reference to any of they're contemporaries/// i'd be really curious to see what 3 other groups people think aids wolf sound like at the end of each comment,,, to see if people are as off base as the fella that mentioned sonic youth and blonde redhead(wtf!),,, like this

sightings
hair police
sissy spacek

it at least shows that i know what im talking about although any lil butt face could just google refrences

whoa, yest some pals told us to check this out , said it was a serious case of "the normals" acting out against something they fail to understand, a stravinski's "rites of spring" sorta sitch annnd well yea kinda,,, i've no sympathies though, aids wolf and bands like them (and us to a much lesser degree) have always delt with this ignorance. i fondly remember dealing with it side by side a/w in regina , sask a few years back , very fond memories indeed/// we will miss them as a band dearly , they were modern heavy psychedelia in all its tormented anguished anarchistic glory Edgar Verese once said "an artist is never ahead of their time but many people are behind their own" i find that suiting also this from Dane Rudhyar "dissonant music is the music of true and spiritual democracy: the music of universal brotherhoods: music of free souls, not of personalities. it abolishes tonalities" welllll maybe not quite yet,,,, music is energy and the energy i felt from aids wolf is the same energy i feel from John Coltrane, Fela Kuti , John Fahey or Captain Beefheart let alone contemporaries like Disguises , Sightings , Stamina Mantis or say Wolf Eyes
knowing i will not experience that live again is sad to say the least, i just wish we could play one of those last shows together for old times sake...
love you's

hey A.grey wich successful artist do you know, that do not entertain their audience?? Nobody wants to pay their hard earned money to see somethings that isnt entertaining. People want a fuckn show. Its kinda whats wrong with the majority of live music now. its just stale. Your a fuckn idiot if you cant see that and personally i could care less about this band. There music just gives me a fuckn headache, regardless how much time they spent woodsheding it (could of fooled me, sounds like they are making it up as they go, matter of fact that would've been cooler). Shit man cant you see that even Aids Wolf is tired of it (multiple line up changes??). I may sound harsh but the truth is they are just another band whos time has come to and end. Im sorry for your lost but like that gal Chloe said everything changes for a reason and who knows they may even start up a newer more interesting project. Rip Aids Wolf. I like you album covers
Start Conversation
ps- sorry if i may of offended you noise purist by the blonde redhead/sonic youth reference but you get where im coming from. May have not of been the best bands to use. but you get that its just another artsy feedback band thats sounds like the other artsy feed back band. Just would be nice to hear some newer experimental sounds that dont sound like someone left their guitar on full blast distortion with someone screaming into a mike. Any idiot can do that.
Start Conversation
i am in no way shape or form saddened to see this band bite the dust.
Start Conversation
AIDS Wolf is one of my all time favorite groups and it really pains me to see them go, nostalgic as that may be.
It has been such a pleasure to get to know Chloe, Yannick and Alex as they've passed through New York in my time living here; many of their shows are some of my most memorable.
They have all been so kind to me and it really is truly discouraging to hear such hateful, arrogant, and ignorant responses to not only their music but to them as humans. Obviously taste is subjective, but to respond with such hostility towards people as a result of ones dislike of their music is an asinine approach to living.
The internet has seemingly dumbed down the potential for thoughtful forms of criticism and instead has bred impulsive and cowardly creatures.

If at all possible I will try and travel to one of their last shows. AW, you guys rule.
Start Conversation
Some of yall are kinda stupid. This band is one of the greatest treasures of the world.
Start Conversation
If you're going to be in it for the longhaul and feel disillusioned when nobobdy likes you, you're either ahead of your time or you genuinly suck. I'm not the one to decide this but to me the whole thing is brought on by a bad combination of great confidence and a sense of entitlement that's really predominant in Western culture. Too bad for the guys and girl in the band but "thems are the breaks.
Start Conversation
Hey Hagstrom, Buttface, Sleazy D and the rest of you inarticulate "normals." I'd hate to see what type of crud exists in your music collection. It's bad enough when the mainstream dumps on bands that want to be different, but to kick an outfit when it's already down is akin to peeing on Jack Layton's grave. Now run along and do something closer to your mindset, like drowning a litter of kittens.
Start Conversation
hahaha, "normals". is this artfag-speak for "hater". shouldn't you be working on your nuit blanche installations instead of arguing on the internet?
Start Conversation
I like eggs
Start Conversation
"This band is one of the greatest treasures of the world."
if that's the case, let's bury them...
Start Conversation
I like their music and got along with them just fine the one time I saw them live. If you thought they were awful people, maybe it's because you said or did something to make them upset?
Start Conversation
This band sucks but it pleases me to know that they all probably refreshed this story 20+ times a day to see more comments despite them being too good for the "normals" that don't "get" their completely useless garbage.
Start Conversation
You people are terrible, it's never good to see a band and their art disappear. If you didn't like their art why bitch about it on here? Grow the fuck up.
Start Conversation
Hey, Gnarlk, "normals" isn't an art-fag colloquialism for "hater," but my reference to lamestream proponents like yourself, better described as "festering gobs of rat sperm." Do the experimental world a favour and go kill yourself; it might make for a half-decent Pollock splatter installation, you pathetic waste of hemoglobin...

As a postscript to my rants, here's what I believe is an Edmonton equivalent to AIDS Wolf, who have managed to crash the local club circuit. This link isn't intended to be spam by any means as I don't benefit from posting this whatsoever, and have no real affiliation with the act, led by vocalist Phil Jagger, a distant relative of the Rolling Stones frontman. Judge for yourself on their merits: www.youtube.com

i don't want to get into bashing aids wolf because most of you have done a pretty good job of that, what i will say is that unlike a lot of musicians i've had experience talking to, chloe is probably one of the most overly sensitive people i've been in conversation with. but i get that she probably got that way because there are a lot of people out there talk shit about aids wolf constantly, as many of you seem to have taken to doing.

it just seems really odd that someone would have an attitude like that given the kind of music they made. i mean, you wouldn't make the kind of tunes they did unless you wanted to provoke a negative reaction, right? if you continually get in someone's face the way they did with their music, why is it so surprising when people pushed back?

there seemed to be a refusal on their part to accept the criticisms of their work. if people didn't like aids wolf's music, it wasn't aids wolf's fault that they made squalls of noise. it was the public's fault for not having such elevated sensibilities as to be educated enough to notice the finesse and artistry and blah blah blah bullshit bullshit bullshit.

overall, i just felt they had a really elitist attitude about the whole matter which is a huge turn off. that said, i never really got to know anyone in aids wolf. there were a couple of conversations and the music, but that was more than enough for me. it is one thing to take your art seriously, but there seemed to be a pervading humorlessness in everything they did. even things like the cover of March To The Sea which struck me as being somewhat funny were burdened with this...i don't know...smog of pretense about them.

i get that they wanted to defend their art. it's not an issue of defending your art so much as it is not being an asshole when someone says the slightest negative thing about you.

that said, i do have a lot of respect for them as artists. they made what they made and didn't make any apologies about it which is cool. they seemed to be fairly successful and accomplished a lot more than most other bands do. that said, i can only feel so much sympathy for them when i consider that there are noise artists out there who have been around for much longer and are still putting out records and even able to tour.

i really don't want to sound too dismissive and diminish what they did so i will just leave it at that and wish them all the best in the future.

regards,
a complete stranger

This thread contains some of the most frightening and sad claims about music, what it should be, what a band should be, and how hated they are if they do anything other than stick to that structure.

Not liking them is fine, but organizing your time, energy, and thoughts to attack them with such base dismissals and insults is just terrible.

I am a bit shocked that Exclaim! would even allow people to monopolize their website with this kind of writing. Exclaim! - you disappoint me.

I wish that everyone's name was published with their posts.
There are many people here that I hope to never meet or share any time with.

It sounds like a lot of people here just DIDN't GET IT. It's sonic art and like visual art, you're bound to get clueless people standing around saying stupid things about something they don't understand.

Good luck AIDS Wolf! Keep jamming.
