By Vish KhannaThough she's a fixture and figurehead in the underground music scene in the Maritimes, Julie Doiron will be closer to the alleged centre of Canada's music universe when she moves to Toronto later this month.
In a recent interview, Doiron reveals that she'll be leaving Sackville, NB in the next few weeks to be closer to her kids. "I'm moving to Toronto because Jon [Claytor], the father of my children is doing a fine arts degree at York University at the end of August. So the whole family's moving there so we can all be together. Well, 'together' in the same city," she laughs.
The prolific singer and songwriter, who helped put Moncton, NB on the map in her band Eric's Trip, mostly seems to be on the road, in some capacity, every day of the year. That said, she's lived in Montreal and, most recently, was a resident of Sackville, where she's helped revitalize SappyFest, a now-annual explosion of arts and music that ranks as one of the most ambitious and successful underground rock festivals in Canada.
With Doiron's infectious energy, there's no telling what kind of good will come Toronto's way, and fans will hopefully get to see her playing in and around southern Ontario on a more regular basis. In the meantime, she's plenty busy these days, touring both with Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles and in Daniel, Fred & Julie , her folk collaboration with Daniel Romano (Attack in Black) and Fred Squire (formerly of Shotgun and Jaybird, and Calm Down, It's Monday) over the next few months.
Squire himself has a new solo album coming out this fall on Blue Fog Recordings, which is an update of his dark, folk blues, tour-only EP, March 12. According to Blue Fog co-owner/Eric's Trip founder Rick White, it's being pressed now and should be out soon.
"It's a really great record," White tells Exclaim! "He gave us a few more songs to work with, we're putting it out on twelve-inch, and I think it's ten songs now. If you've heard the EP, he gave us the original files so we could master it properly and it's sounding real good. He did a great job; he's the king of making old gear work."
