Shimmering Stars - 'Bedrooms of the Nation' (album stream)
By Alex HudsonVancouver indie pop act Shimmering Stars tapped into Everly Brothers-style sweetness on 2011's Violent Hearts, but they've hinted that their new album Bedrooms of the Nation will showcase a darker sound. Now, fans can hear it for themselves, since the album is streaming on ahead of its arrival on August 13.

The band recorded the record themselves at their own Garage Mahal studio in Kamloops, BC. It was then mixed by Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Black Mountain, the New Pornographers).

The opening "Intro" hints at a shadowier sound with its cavernous swaths of fuzz and reverb. This sets the tone for the album, which cloaks its stormy tunes in dreamy effects and slathers them with honey-sweet harmonies. In other words, it's not too much of a departure from Violent Hearts, but with the retro pop styling downplayed in favour of grungy abstractions.
